Mesopotamian Times
Two of the two city-states in Mesopotamia were Uruk and Akkad. They were developed along the Euphrates River. The buildings were
constructed by using sandstone blocks, mud bricks, or clay. The clay is from the river banks.
Uruk was the first major city. The population was 80,000 people. The city was
located in Southern Mesopotamia along the Euphrates River. The City of Akkad was the first empire. Sargon the Great, was the king of
Akkad. Akkad was located by the Tigris River. They are located in these areas because of the water supply from the rivers for irrigation.
Irrigation was a good source for growing crops, which was good for farming. This allowed for an abundance of food.
The buildings were constructed by using sandstone blocks, mud bricks, or clay. The upper class homes were large and wide. Every house
had three stories. These homes stood alone. The lower class homes were narrow. The houses were constructed by sharing walls with each
other. The reason this was done was to help with the cost of building a home. The farmers homes were narrow also. Their houses had three
stories also. They also shared walls with each other to help with the cost.
The houses were made from mud bricks, the materials came from the river banks. The bricks were packed into small bricks and set out in
the sun to dry. These materials were used to build their homes helping to keep the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The
houses were built with flat roofs so that people could sleep on them when it was warm outside.
Two main city-states of Mesopotamia were Uruk and Akkad. Important to realize about the houses, buildings, and how they were built.
The class of the people and the types of houses they lived in. Finally why these materials are important.
